Mara Salvatrucha is a global syndicate of murder, extortion and rape with members believed to number in the tens of thousands.
The gang, which has been linked to a plot to assassinate U.S. Border Patrol agents, has more than 30 gang subsets in Los Angeles County alone. Worldwide, it has between 20,000 and 30,000 members and in Southern California, its members stretch as far east as San Bernardino, according to the FBI.
A confidential Department of Homeland Security memo obtained by the Daily Bulletin on Monday stated that Mexican human and drug traffickers plan to smuggle members of the Mara Salvatrucha gang into the United States and pay them to kill Border Patrol agents.
“It’s plausible that they could target agents, but I don’t know,” said Wes McBride, president of the California Gang Investigators Association. “I wouldn’t put anything past them. Gangs truly are a terrorist threat to our nation.”Download pdf
